Audio Editor Software Review
Dexster Audio Editor
Dexster Audio Editor, from Softdiv Software, may not offer as many editing tools as GoldWave, but it makes up for it in ease of use. Anyone can use this product to pull audio from video files, convert formats, record from the internet, add effects, filter or burn CDs. The manufacturer is constantly improving the product and adding new tutorials and offers free upgrades for a year. This software can work with a wide variety of compressed or uncompressed WAV files as well as AIFF (Apple), AU, AVI, MP3, OGG and WMA (Windows). Audio Editing: This product can perform batch processing and conversions as well as edit marker and tag information. All of the edits have a preview option and are fully adjustable. It supports quite a few preset effects, including compressor/expander, fade in/out, cross fading, flange, phase, normalize, envelope, reverb and vibrato. Dexster Audio Editor offers a good collection of filters including high and low shelf, notch, band pass, FFT and a peak EQ filter. It can also reduce silences and vocals and trim. It would be nice if they had an effect chain editor and the ability to punch in/out, perhaps in one of their upcoming versions. Recording/Burning Ability: It is easy to record with this product, you can record anything off the internet, from a line-in or it can rip from a CD or extract audio from a video file. It can also work with many formats and the manufacturer is always adding new formats through updates. The program will work with most WAV and MP3 type files and several kinds of video files. It also includes CD burning software. Ease of Use: This is one of the easiest products to use, especially for beginners. You do not have to know how to perform special adjustments to get advanced effects; just simply use one of their preset effects or filters. The main screen includes icons and drop down menus as well as boxes for the controls, effects and zoom preferences. The mouse scroll can zoom in and out as far as you want instantly and you can perform basic edits such as cut, paste or mix from file, copy and select from the right click options. It also uses some of the basic window short cut keys, such as cut (ctrl+x), paste (ctrl+v) and so on. Help and Support: This product has excellent support if you need help figuring out how to use their tools or create a specific effect. It has inter-program help pages, user guide, defined terms and tutorials as well as an online user forum, tutorials, FAQs and access to technical support by email. They update often and with purchase, you get free updates for a year. Summary: Both creative and technical types can use Dexster Audio Editor to produce great sounding mixes for an online radio station, website or for a high-exposure corporate presentation.
